Is Using AWS Worth It for Live Streaming and On-Demand Content in a School?

Hey everyone! I'm looking into whether AWS services would be a good fit for a private school that mainly wants to use it for on-demand content and hosting live stream events. We're thinking about doing 2-3 live streams a week, likely 1-2 hours each in 1080p quality. I know there's a 'pay as you go' model with AWS, but I'm a bit uncertain about the overall costs. Any insights? Thanks in advance!

AWS gives you tons of tools to create solutions, but it needs time and expertise to put everything together. For live streaming, have you considered tools like Zoom, Teams, or YouTube Live? They’re much easier and quicker to set up than an AWS custom solution.

Using services like Kaltura or Brightcove might be a better option than AWS for your needs. They simplify content management and streaming, which saves you a lot of hassle. Pricing depends mainly on how much content you have and how many users are watching, though.

AWS provides the necessary building blocks for your needs, but they're not designed with ease of use in mind. It might take a lot of effort to set everything up. Instead, look for a SaaS that focuses on your specific use case—they usually offer support and resources to get you started easier.

AWS can be a cost-effective option for both on-demand content and live streaming, but you're looking at expenses related to data usage, storage, and how many hours you're streaming. Definitely check out the AWS pricing calculator for a clearer picture.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend AWS for your scenario. I've been working with it for years, and it has many hidden costs. You might want to consider platforms like Vimeo instead for streaming.
