What salary should I ask for as the only IT tech in a downsized company?

Hey everyone,

I'm likely to become the sole IT technician for a company with around 230 employees, as I've heard my manager will be laid off, and the other tech has already been let go a few months back. I'll be taking over most of my manager's responsibilities while still handling my own tasks. I'll have some support from a Managed Service Provider (MSP), but I'm not sure how involved they'll be since they haven't done much so far.

Currently, I'm earning 85,000 AUD and am thinking of asking for a raise to 100,000 AUD for the first year, with hopes of a further increase after I gain more skills. Does that sound reasonable? I have 2.5 years of experience in tech, plus a few years in IT change management. What salary do you think I should aim for in this situation? Have any of you been in a similar position?

You might want to tread carefully with your salary ask. Given that others around you have been laid off, there's a chance they could keep you around for a bit longer just to bridge the gap during the transition to the MSP. It might be wise to start looking for other job opportunities just in case things change.
