Is it Worth Attending a Hackathon as a Beginner?

I've been learning tech for about two years, but my path has been pretty chaotic and unstructured. Recently, I found better guidance and started to understand what hackathons are all about. I've always known they exist, but never felt ready to jump into one. Now I'm considering attending my first hackathon, which focuses on APIs. The thing is, I've never used an API before. I've watched some mentor videos, and they suggest that many beginners go into hackathons without knowing the theme or tools — they just show up and learn as they go. So, I'm really curious: Have any of you gone to a hackathon when you weren't particularly knowledgeable? What was your experience like?

You know how everyone talks about 'networking' but it sounds vague? Hackathons are the perfect way to actually do it! They connect you with people who really see your work ethic in action.

Go for it! It's not just fun, but you’ll also learn a ton. Hackathons gather folks with all sorts of skills, so brainstorming and bouncing ideas around is a big part of it!

I owe my entire career to a hackathon! My team actually won, and two out of five of us got hired afterward because they loved our idea.

Absolutely, I learned so much that changed my perspective on software engineering. I worked with someone pretty experienced, though, so I'm not sure how much you’d get out of it alone or with less experienced folks, but it’s still a blast and you gain a lot just by participating.

I personally think hackathons can be overrated. If you’re not prepared, it can feel like a lot of pressure. But who knows, maybe you’ll enjoy it!
