How Do I Power My RTX 5080?

I recently purchased an RTX 5080 (PNY OC version) and I'm now facing some challenges getting it powered up. My current setup is fairly basic with an i5 12600k and an RX 6600XT, and I know the new card will likely bottleneck my CPU. Given the high prices of RAM lately, I can't upgrade to DDR5 right now. I have a Cooler Master 850W MWE V2 (80+ gold) power supply that I bought in 2021, but I'm not sure if the cables it comes with are compatible with the RTX 5080. Additionally, I have a Fractal Meshify C Mini case and I'm worried about whether the GPU will even fit. I'm looking for the most affordable solution to get this card running without spending too much more money or waiting. It's just sitting on my desk now!

Your RTX 5080 should have come with a 12VhPWR connector. The previous RTX 30 series used an 8-Pin PCIe power connector, so check if you got that adapter with your card. If you're not sure, it might be best to consider getting a new PSU that includes the 12VhPWR connector instead of relying on third-party adapters.

Don't sweat the bottleneck too much. Unless you're playing really demanding games at high settings on a 1440p monitor with a 160Hz refresh rate, it's unlikely both your CPU and GPU will max out at the same time. Your GPU should hit 100% usage first in most scenarios unless you're running CPU-intensive tasks like simulation games or heavy multitasking. If you feel you need a CPU upgrade, you don’t have to go to DDR5. Since you're on a 12600k and likely using a DDR4 motherboard, you can simply upgrade to a 14600k with just a BIOS update. Good luck getting your new GPU set up!
