Is Debian a Steep Learning Curve for Beginners?

I'm planning to switch to Linux soon and I've heard a lot about Debian, particularly with the KDE desktop environment. I've dabbled a bit with Mint and Ubuntu, so I'm familiar with the basics of the terminal. However, I've heard that the learning curve for Debian can be steeper. What specific challenges might I face, and how difficult is it to resolve any problems that come up?

User experience-wise, Debian is pretty similar to Mint and Ubuntu, aside from the desktop environment. Just a quick tip: don’t set a root password during installation. It’ll make it easier to set up sudo permissions once you're in.

I found Debian to be quite simple to install after a year with Mint. Everything worked right out of the box—just a few apps like Chrome and Brave needed installing after setup.

Honestly, the learning curve for Debian isn't as steep as you might think. If you can Google your issues and evaluate the information you find, you'll navigate through most problems easily. Just a heads up, Debian doesn't come with proprietary codecs pre-installed, so you'll need to set those up to listen to music or watch videos, but there are plenty of guides out there to help you out. It's really manageable!

Totally agree! Being able to find information is key to learning Debian and Linux in general.

Thanks for clarifying! This sounds more doable than I expected.

The learning curve is slightly higher than Mint, but it's still manageable and well worth it!

Debian isn’t much more complex than Mint or Ubuntu. You’ll likely just have to tweak a few things here and there, but overall it's pretty user-friendly right from the start.

Debian does require a bit more work after installation compared to Mint or Ubuntu, but it’s not particularly hard. It might just take more time. I found it to be one of my best learning experiences with Linux because you grasp so much when you troubleshoot.

Debian might be a bit challenging to set up initially, but once you've got it running, it feels pretty similar to Mint and Ubuntu. Just take your time with the initial setup.

I think I'm going to give it a shot then. Appreciate the feedback!

Could you clarify what you mean by harder? I haven't tried Debian yet.

Using the KDE live installer for Debian makes the setup easy, like many KDE-based distros. The only issues might arise with Nvidia cards, but enabling Flatpak should streamline the process.

Make sure to check out some tutorials before installing. Since Ubuntu is based on Debian, you should feel right at home.

Honestly, the transition back to Debian after using Mint was smooth for me! The installation was straightforward, and unlike what I remembered, everything worked fine right away this time around. I believe that even newcomers can manage it without too much hassle.
