Can an RTX 5070 run on a 600W power supply?

My friend has a system similar to mine, but he's rocking an RTX 5070 while I have a 5060Ti 8Gb. Unfortunately, his Thermaltake 700W PSU just broke down, and he's looking for a replacement. I have an old Corsair 600W power supply lying around from another rig. He crunched the numbers and thinks it should work, but I'm not so sure. I'm okay with giving him the PSU since it's just collecting dust, though I told him if anything goes wrong with the GPU, it's on him. Here's his setup: Ryzen 5 5600X, MSI RTX5070 Ventus 2x OC 12GB, MSI Pro B550M-VC, 32GB RAM, and a couple of SSDs. Various PSU calculators suggest it will be fine, but I'd like some second opinions before we proceed!

Thanks all for the feedback! I'll definitely pass this info on to him. Much appreciated!

Igor's lab found that the peaks for the RTX 5070 can hit about 500W, but that's for really short bursts. A good quality 600W PSU should be okay, but keep in mind the age of the unit could lead to instability. If possible, power limit the 5070 to 250W to ensure some extra safety. Just my two cents!

Honestly, I would suggest going for at least an 850W PSU to have plenty of headroom for future upgrades. It’s just safer to avoid any potential power issues.

Technically, a 600W unit should handle it since the GPU uses around 250W and the CPU is about 88W. Add in some overhead for the motherboard and drives, and it should be fine below 400W. But I still recommend replacing it with something newer for better reliability, especially if the Corsair unit is aging.

The Corsair is from like 2014, so I’m definitely worried about its reliability. Thanks for the input!

Running an RTX 5070 on a 600W PSU seems doable, especially if the power supply is good quality. I personally have a more power-hungry 7800XT running fine on a 650W PSU. Your friend's setup looks solid, and the total draw should be under 400W under normal circumstances. Just make sure that PSU isn’t too old since older units can be less stable even if they’re technically sufficient.
