Hey everyone! I'm in need of some help. My work laptop just died, and I've been asked to choose a replacement. I was planning to build a PC, with my go-to being a Ryzen 5 7600 plus 32GB RAM, but the recent RAM shortage has thrown a wrench into my plans. My budget is maxed out at $600, but I'd prefer to stay around $500. Here are a few options I'm considering: get a computer with 16GB RAM, build a PC with DDR4, go for another laptop, a mini PC, or even a Mac Mini. I mainly need to run VSCode, and even an older Ryzen 5 3500U would probably suffice, but I'd like to maximize my specs considering the situation. What do you think is the best value option?

Have you thought about a MacBook Air? It could meet your needs if you can score one at a good price.
There are definitely options to consider. Check local retail stores where the prices might still be lower, or use laptop RAM conversion kits for desktops since they’re cheaper, even for DDR5. Don't sweat the memory speed; just get your work machine up and running!
If you decide to go the laptop route, a used Thinkpad could be a solid choice. Look for enterprise models like the T or P series; they'll give you great specs for the price.
Absolutely! I've had great experiences with Thinkpads. Just steer clear of the L series since they're more entry-level and can have annoying quirks.
Fun fact, my last laptop was a Thinkpad too, but it unfortunately had a motherboard failure.
Honestly, I'd lean towards the Mac Mini. It's lightweight on storage but will likely perform better than most Windows options within your budget.
For the best performance-to-price ratio currently, check out the combination of a 14600k with DDR4, or the Minisforum MoTD that uses DDR5 laptop RAM. Those could give you a solid upgrade path.

But isn’t that over $800 for 16GB? Plus, you only get 256GB storage.
