I've always been taught to be cautious when using computers, especially regarding viruses and spyware. We were told to be careful about which websites we visited and what we clicked on. Browsers are usually very strict because of the fear of online threats. However, I recently discovered that the Zoom application can automatically download and install itself on my computer with just a single click on a Zoom call link. How is this allowed? I'm baffled by this situation. Did I miss a significant change in web development that makes this possible?

Zoom has never been the best when it comes to security, honestly. It's surprising they’ve been given a pass to self-install when you click a link. I feel like we must have missed something along the way in terms of online safety!
If Zoom was never on your computer before, it shouldn't be installing itself automatically. Since you mentioned that it's a fresh install, maybe you did a restore from an older configuration? Zoom doesn’t respect user permissions very well, but if it fully installed itself, that raises some serious security concerns. By the way, if you're on Windows, they might be using some auto-install feature through the MS Store!
Are you sure it's not a PWA (Progressive Web App)? If that's the case, it's just functioning in a browser window, which limits its access to your local system more than if it were a standalone application.
What you might be referring to is that in the past, Zoom had a feature where even if you uninstalled it, it could reinstall itself with just one click. This isn't typical behavior for web browsers or operating systems, which usually won't allow that. They've faced scrutiny for security issues, so I'm not sure if this is still the case these days.
