I'm planning to build a PC that runs Windows 7 since I have some older software that works best with it. I'm curious if the i7 6700k is a suitable option for this setup. Additionally, how challenging will it be to find a compatible motherboard for it?

What software are you trying to run on Windows 7? Sometimes knowing this helps figure out the best CPU.
It's an old accounting program from 2010. It's really functional and can handle a lot of users at once. We keep using it because the new ones have costly subscription fees, especially if you need more users.
I think the i7 6700k might be more than you actually need for Windows 7. The more affordable and best i7 for this OS would probably be the i7 860. Anything newer may just be overkill and expensive.
Check places like the marketplace or even the curb. I found a complete system for $40 nearby!
I'm not really looking for just the cheapest option, though. I want the most optimized CPU that will work well with Windows 7.

It might be some specialized medical software. My brother-in-law helps with programs like that for my mom regularly.
