Should I Focus on DevSecOps or Cybersecurity for My Career?

I'm currently pursuing a Master's degree in Cybersecurity and have a Bachelor's in Computer Science with a specialization in Cloud Computing. I'm trying to decide whether to focus my career on Cybersecurity or DevSecOps. At the moment, I can only dedicate my efforts to one of these fields. I have a basic understanding of both, but I want to specialize in just one. I would greatly appreciate any advice or insights from those with experience in these areas!

Since you're doing a Master's in Cybersecurity, leaning towards DevSecOps could be beneficial. It combines your Cyber background with real-world software development, and there's a huge demand for people who understand both areas. Unlike traditional Cybersecurity roles that often get stuck in audits or SOC queues, DevSecOps puts you directly in the tech pipeline, working with real builds and addressing vulnerabilities before they impact releases. The industry is moving towards preventing issues rather than just finding them, so this path might be a smart move for you!

You might find yourself shifting towards system admin or software engineering regardless of your choice. Companies typically look for experience in these roles, and many view Master's programs as a money grab without real job readiness. It's vital to consider how you're gaining practical experience alongside your studies.

Starting in Help Desk is common; you usually progress to SysAdmin after that. Cloud Engineers basically come from a Systems Engineer background. It's a typical career path, so don't be discouraged!
