Help! My iPhone 13 Battery is Swollen and I Need to Back Up My Photos

My husband has an iPhone 13 that started turning off and on by itself a few days ago, and the battery seems to have swollen, causing the screen to bulge. He didn't back up his photos on iCloud, and now he really regrets it. We want to know how long it would take to back up around 12,000 photos and if trying to do that now poses any risks, especially since the phone only powers on when it's plugged in. Also, is there a chance Apple can replace the battery without wiping the phone?

Definitely don't plug it in or try to use it for backups right now. Keep that battery as low as possible to prevent leaks, and maybe store it safely until you can get it serviced. It might not explode, but there's a chance it could start leaking if you push it too much!

Totally agree! I keep my phone in a metal container until it gets repaired. Just to be safe!

Backing up that many photos will take a while, especially with a swollen battery. Honestly, it's best to stop using the phone immediately. There's a high risk of causing more damage if you keep plugging it in. Apple might replace the battery, but they'll usually warn you that data loss is possible when they handle devices in this state. Better to be safe than sorry!

Yeah, I've heard they typically won’t do a battery replacement on a swollen one due to safety concerns. You really want to avoid risks with that battery!

Since you can’t keep it on without power, just power it down and take it somewhere safe. Apple will likely just replace it and wipe your data, so be prepared for that. It's risky to keep it plugged in since there’s a chance it could swell enough to rupture.

You probably shouldn't try to back it up while it's like this; it could lead to worse problems. Better to let Apple handle it, even if it means losing your photos. Please handle that swollen battery with care!
