I'm upgrading my brother's PC with a new Ryzen 7700, moving away from his old AM4 setup. However, due to the recent increase in RAM prices, I'm trying to decide if it's better to buy a single 16GB DDR5 stick now and add another later, or just wait and buy a 32GB kit when prices drop. I understand that using mismatched RAM can be hit or miss, but if I purchase the same stick later, will that be risky? I really appreciate any advice!

Matched kits are specifically tested for compatibility, so even if you buy the same model later, there's no guarantee they'll work flawlessly together. DDR5 handles single-channel better than DDR4, but you might run into small issues. If you can't hold off for a year until prices stabilize, go for what you can afford now!
I'd recommend just getting the single stick for now. You can always sell it later and upgrade to a proper 2x16 kit once you've saved up. Plus, it’ll get your brother gaming again in no time!
Absolutely! That way, we can start gaming together sooner.
The main concern with buying a single stick now is that prices might go up even more. Generally, mismatched RAM sticks can work together, but it's not guaranteed like with a matched kit. If you can, I suggest considering a lower-specced 32GB kit right now and upgrade later if necessary.
Yeah, but low-speed kits are pretty pricey where I'm at too.
Honestly, I don't see RAM prices dropping any time soon. If your brother needs a functioning system within the next year, it might be best to buy now. You can usually buy the same kit later and add it without too much trouble. Just keep an eye on stability and maybe reference a tuning guide if needed.

Thanks for that insight, really helps me figure things out!
