Should I Choose AMD or Intel for My New Gaming PC?

I'm in the process of building a new gaming PC and am torn between sticking with Intel or making the switch to AMD. I really like Intel, but I've heard some negative things about their latest CPUs. My goal is to get the best performance for my budget while building a high-end system. I'm located in the UK, and from what I've found, some AMD CPUs seem more expensive than their Intel counterparts. Also, I'm a bit confused by AMD's naming conventions and how they compare to Intel's. Here's a rough outline of my current build plan: I'm going for a DDR4 motherboard (LGA 1700) and considering an Intel i7 14700KF or i7 12700KF due to temperature and wattage concerns. I'm also planning to use an RTX 5070 for the GPU. I've decided on most of the smaller components like RAM and fans, but they don't really factor into this decision. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Are you still planning to use DDR4 RAM? If you've got a kit ready, that's a good way to save some cash!

Yeah, I've got 64GB of DDR4 just sitting around. I'm thinking of eventually upgrading to a DDR5 motherboard though.

For DDR4, I’d say the i5 14600K (with an updated BIOS) beats the 12700K. If you’re looking at AMD, the AM4 X3D offers decent performance too, but for DDR5, the AM5 X3D is king. Just keep in mind that I’d steer clear of the i7 14700K and 14900K even with the newer BIOS updates.

So you’re suggesting I go with DDR4 and the i5-14600, and then maybe switch to DDR5 and AMD AM5 later on?

Instead of the i7s, have you considered the i5 14600K? It's a solid choice and would perform well for gaming, especially if you want to avoid spending too much on DDR5 RAM right now. LGA 1700 still has great options for DDR4.

Is it really better than the other options?
