How to Safely Prepare for a Windows Reinstall Without Losing Data?

I'm getting ready to reinstall Windows on my laptop because I've been having performance issues. A support service told me that the only folder I really need to back up is the Users folder, which contains all my main files like Downloads and Desktop. Since this is my first time doing a reinstall, I'm a bit nervous and want to double-check if that's true. I understand that everything important is in the Users folder, but I'm also worried because some files in there might connect to others, like in ProgramData. Should I just back up Users, or is there more I need to consider?

Besides your Users folder, if you've got any custom programs or games that store data outside that directory, definitely back those up. Another option is to create a full disk image using software like Macrium Reflect. That way, if you miss something, you can recover it from the image later.

Yeah, you're mostly safe backing up the Users folder. Most of your important personal files are there. Unless you’ve manually saved files in other directories, you should be good to go! But if you have specific programs that save data elsewhere, like games, you might wanna check those too.

It’s a good plan to back up the Users folder thoroughly, but remember to check any apps or games you use that might save stuff in their own folders outside of Users. And it’s always a good idea to verify your backups just to make sure you don’t lose anything important!
