Considering an Upgrade for My CPU: What’s the Best Route?

I'm currently using an AM4 platform with a Ryzen 7 2700X CPU, and I'm thinking about upgrading. The 5700X3D is way out of my budget, so I'm considering a Ryzen 9 5900X. However, I'm not sure if it's worth it compared to switching to a 12th gen Intel setup with a 12900K. I have an RX 7800 XT and 16GB of DDR4 RAM (likely 3000MHz), and I'm planning to bump that up to 32GB. Mainly, I play games and occasionally edit videos for online classes, with Total War being a big title in my library—so I know I need something solid for CPU performance. I'd prefer to stick with DDR4 due to the high prices of DDR5 RAM right now.

If cost is a concern, the 5700X is definitely the way to go. The performance difference for gaming between it and the 5900X isn't huge, and the 5700X is much cooler and power-efficient. If you're serious about gaming, the 5700X3D would be the best choice, but stick to what fits your budget.

I'd recommend going for the Ryzen 5700X. For gaming, you won't really make use of the extra cores in the 5900X. The 5700X does a great job while being more cost-effective. Just my two cents!

Totally agree, and if you can, pair it with some 3600 MT/s RAM for better performance.

Upgrading to a Ryzen 5th gen will definitely boost your performance! Just don't forget to update your BIOS first. The 12th gen Intel option could work too, but it may get pricey. I run a 5800X, and it's been awesome with a 3060 Ti!

Remember, the 5700X3D has a stacked Cache, which makes it superior for gaming compared to the 5900X, which leans more towards multitasking with more cores. But it all comes down to your usage. Before you decide, just make sure your motherboard can handle the upgrade!

Exactly! If it doesn’t have x3D at the end, it might not be worth it for gaming.
