Is there a way to render a game at 4K resolution even if my monitor only supports 2K? I want to avoid having the image downscaled because I'm working on a VR mod that relies on splitting the resolution between each eye. Since 2K isn't optimal, I'd like to utilize 4K. Any ideas on how to achieve this?

You might have to get creative. Some games support rendering at a higher resolution natively, and they just display part of that image on the screen. So, while you wouldn't see the entire picture, the detail could still help with VR.
If you’re rendering at 4K on a 2K monitor, you’re right that it won’t display the full resolution without being downscaled. Generally, your monitor can only show so many pixels. So unless you’re using a VR headset that handles the resolution differently, it might not be possible to see everything clearly without cropping or resizing.
Honestly, it's an interesting challenge you've got there. If you're looking to push 4K for VR, it might be that some games do allow for this, but it usually relies on specific settings or mods. You'd typically just crop the image since a 2K display can't show the entire 4K frame.
I get what you’re saying; there are games that let you render higher and just crop the view for playback. It's a bit of a hack but could work!

That makes sense; you'd just get a zoomed-in view of the game, which isn't ideal for what you want.
