Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my PC for the upcoming year, and I could really use your advice. Here are my current specs:
- AMD Ryzen 5 3600
- 32GB DDR4 RAM @ 3200MHz
- 120GB SSD for my C drive
- 1TB HDD for my D drive
- EVGA RTX 3060
- Tomahawk B550 motherboard
- Ryzen 7 RGB CPU cooler
I've noticed that one of my case fans is dead, so maybe replacing that should be considered, but I'm kinda clueless about how much it affects performance. All these parts were bought back in 2020-2021, so they're getting a bit old.
I primarily play games like Counter-Strike 2, Overwatch 2, Fortnite, and Valorant. For other software, I use FL Studio, Adobe After Effects, Blender, and Clickteam Fusion 2.5.
I've been having some trouble getting consistent FPS above 165 in CS:2 even on low settings; it gets choppy at asset-heavy sections. The other games run fairly well though.
Thanks for any help! Happy holidays!

I think your biggest upgrade should be the CPU first, especially if you're looking for performance gains in gaming and productivity. You could go for a used Ryzen 5700X3D if you're willing to spend a bit more, or save some cash with a cheaper option like the Ryzen 5800X. Just be aware that switching to AM5 is a better long-term option but it can get pricey with the DDR5 RAM costs.
Before tackling any big upgrades, just remember: your current GPU is still quite good for 1080p gaming. You might just need to swap that HDD for an SSD for faster load times. A Ryzen 7 5800X could also be a solid upgrade if your software demands more cores!
I’d recommend going for the Ryzen 5800X if you're playing mostly at 1080p. It's a solid upgrade over the 3600 while keeping your build cost-effective. And don’t forget to get at least a 1TB SSD—your system performance will skyrocket!
Honestly, the order of upgrades should be storage then CPU. Boosting your boot drive from that 128GB SSD to something bigger will really improve overall performance. Then look at getting the 5800X for that sweet FPS boost in games and faster rendering in your apps!
If you're looking to maximize your performance, definitely upgrade your storage first! That tiny 120GB SSD isn't cutting it. A larger NVMe SSD will speed things up significantly. Then maybe consider upgrading to a Ryzen 5 5600 for a solid FPS boost. It’s still a great choice for esports games!
That's a great tip on storage! Is there an easy way to transfer my data from the current SSD to a new one without having to reinstall everything?

As a broke college student myself, I totally get it! I’m trying to save up too. Just remember, sticking with AM4 for now might be the best way to balance upgrading without breaking the bank.
