Can I use my existing RAM with a Ryzen upgrade?

I recently bought a pre-built PC online and now I want to upgrade it on a budget. My current setup has an i5-7400 CPU and an RX 580 graphics card. I have 16GB of RAM, but I'm unsure about its speed—Task Manager shows it as 2400MHz, while my PC information states it's 3200MHz. I asked the online store about switching to a Ryzen 5600 processor, and they told me I'd need to change both the motherboard and RAM, which isn't in my budget. However, a local PC service said I can reuse my current RAM since it's DDR4. I'm trying to figure out who's right. Can I reuse my RAM, and do I need to know more about its specifications?

You can definitely reuse your RAM with a Ryzen 5000 series processor. If your RAM is 3200MHz, that's great! If it's 2400MHz, just expect lower performance during gaming. Also, remember you'll need a new AM4 motherboard, but there are budget-friendly B550 options available.

Absolutely, you can reuse your RAM! Just ensure your new motherboard is compatible with DDR4. By the way, it might be useful to find out the exact model of your RAM for maximum compatibility.

Yes, you can reuse your RAM since it's DDR4. Ideally, you want it to be 3600MHz for the best performance with the Ryzen 5600, but even if it's 2400MHz, it's still a great way to save money given the current prices of RAM.

If your RAM speed is actually 3200MHz, that's ideal for Zen3 processors. If it's showing 2400MHz in Task Manager, you might want to double-check your settings or BIOS for the correct speed.

AM4 supports DDR4, so your RAM should work perfectly! Just a heads up, AM5 uses DDR5, so you'd need new RAM if you went that route in the future.
