I'm new to PC building and accidentally tried inserting an AM4 CPU into an AM5 socket, which resulted in a small spark when I removed it. I didn't force it into place, just set it on top before realizing it wouldn't fit. Now I'm concerned about whether the CPU is still usable for a future build. What do you think?

Always unplug everything before working on your PC! Since you didn't force it, there’s a chance the CPU is okay, but inspect it carefully. If you notice any bent pins or damage, that could be an issue, but it might still work if there's no visible damage.
It's hard to say for sure, but sparks can indicate a potential short circuit. You mentioned that none of the components were on, so maybe it was just static. Either way, it's a good idea to check for any visible damage or bent pins on the CPU and socket before trying to use it again.
I doubt there’s actual internal damage since you weren't powering anything. Just check for bent pins on both the CPU and the socket. You should be able to tell if there’s an issue when you fit it into a compatible socket later.
