Is It Worth Pairing an Older i7-7700K with a New RTX 5060?

I'm considering upgrading my GPU since my brother is offering me his old RTX 5060 for free after he upgraded to a 5080. My current setup includes an i7-7700K, which I'm worried might bottleneck the new GPU. I've been using my build for about six years now, and it feels like it's slowing down. I'm currently using an RX 580 8GB, and moving to the 5060 would be an upgrade, but I'm unsure if my CPU will hinder performance significantly. I'm primarily gaming at 1080p. Would overclocking the CPU help alleviate any issues?

Pairing it with the 5060 is perfectly fine. Sure, there will be some CPU limitations in CPU-heavy games, but it’s not going to be a total disaster. The 5060 is about 40% faster than a 1080ti, which is a solid boost and should still do well enough paired with your 7700K.

Good point! Frame generation tech also makes older CPUs less of a bottleneck than before.

I had a similar experience upgrading my GPU with an older CPU, and it didn't work as well as I hoped. While the difference can be nice in some games, others that are very CPU-intensive might leave you disappointed. Consider if you might need a full system upgrade down the line to really benefit from newer GPUs.

Honestly, it's free, so why not give it a shot? The 5060 should perform better than your RX 580, even with the older CPU. There might be a few scenarios where the CPU holds back performance, but overall, I think you'll see a nice improvement.

Yeah, the 5060 will be a solid upgrade over the RX 580. You’re looking at a better overall experience without worrying too much about the i7-7700K holding you back. It’s not like you're trying to run a top-tier GPU with it anyway!

Totally agree! It's about time you upgrade from that RX 580.

You won’t see much improvement in CPU-bound games, but you can definitely crank up the settings in others. Testing it out could lead to better FPS and graphics. Just be mindful that some CPU-heavy titles might still struggle due to your i7 being a bit aged.
