What’s the Best CPU for Upgrading from a 7900 XT Now with Future Plans for a 9070 XT?

I'm currently feeling like my gaming rig isn't performing as well as it should with my 7900 XT. I'm considering an upgrade and looking for recommendations on a CPU that would not only suit my current GPU but also be compatible with a 9070 XT in the future, as I plan to make that upgrade by around 2026. My setup is mostly used for gaming, particularly CPU-intensive titles like Rust. I'm open to suggestions for motherboards and coolers as my budget is not a concern. Also, I realize my current system lacks an M.2 SSD, and I'm planning to replace that soon. I appreciate any insights you have!

If you're willing to go all-in with a new setup, consider the AM5 platform. For optimal performance at 1440p, the 9600X is great for FPS per dollar. Just keep in mind that if you choose an X3D CPU, you won't need to stress much about RAM timings. Aim for something like 5600-6400MHz with decent latency for the best performance without breaking your budget.

Yeah, switching to the 9070 XT primarily for better FSR support seems like an expensive move when the performance difference isn't major. If you’re looking for CPU recommendations, going for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D or even the 9800X3D would help, especially since you’ll be ready for DDR5. Keep in mind, upgrading to AM5 means investing in a new motherboard, RAM, and CPU. It's definitely a bit pricey right now, but worth considering your future-proofing.

Exactly, and with RAM prices being what they are, it could really add up. Just be sure that if you go this route, you get RAM that's as close to 6000MHz as possible for the best performance!

Honestly, the 7900 XT and the 9070 XT are pretty similar in performance, so you don't necessarily need a huge upgrade to match them. If you really want an upgrade now, the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X is super powerful, but with AM5 CPUs out, you might want to look into those instead for better gaming performance. For your gaming needs, moving towards newer tech could pay off in the long run.
