What should I upgrade first on my aging PC for gaming?

I've realized my PC is starting to feel a bit dated since the Oblivion Remaster release. Here are my current specs: AMD 5600XT, AMD 3600X, 32GB RAM, a 650W PSU, an X570 motherboard, and a 1TB SSD. I'm looking for advice on what components I should focus on upgrading first to get the best value. Should it be my GPU or CPU? I'm also considering whether I need a new motherboard to support the latest tech. I have an initial budget of around $500-$600, but I'm willing to stretch that to about $1000 if necessary. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you're thinking about smaller steps, a used 5800X3D combined with a 6800XT could fit your budget. I used to run a similar setup, and I was getting great performance at 1440P in games, including the new Oblivion, so it might be worth considering before going all out on a full upgrade.

Really? Where are you finding 6800XTs in Canada for that price? Seems like a great deal!

How about considering a 5700X3D? I just got one from eBay for about $200, and it's performing really well. You might even find a used 7800XT or 7900XT in the $400-$500 range, but make sure your PSU is up to the task – a good quality one in the 750W or 850W range is ideal!

I have an 850W PSU paired with my 7800XT, and it's doing just fine, pulling only about 200-250 watts.

Start by looking at your monitor and the types of games you play. For strategic games, prioritize CPU upgrades; for shooters or RPGs, the GPU is more important. Based on Oblivion, you might wanna push your budget towards a new GPU.

You could just upgrade to a better GPU for now. Your current setup meets Oblivion's recommended specs, so it might be a bit overkill to upgrade everything just for one game.

I agree! Some people jump to AM5 upgrades, but if you're not playing on ultra settings, a better GPU might do the trick.

Honestly, your rig isn't too far behind. A GPU upgrade may suffice, as the 3600X is still pretty powerful. Just make sure if you upgrade the GPU, to check if your PSU needs an upgrade too!

I'd recommend looking into upgrading to a new AM5 setup, possibly grabbing a 9600X along with a newer GPU like the B580 or 7700XT. It could be a significant investment, but a total rebuild might be worthwhile in the long run!

So you’re suggesting a whole new rebuild, huh? That's a pretty big jump!
