Should I Upgrade My GPU First or Build a New AM5 Gaming PC?

I'm currently gaming at 1440p with a Ryzen 7 5700X, RTX 3060 12GB, and 32GB of DDR4-3600 memory. Gaming is my main hobby, so I'd like to improve my experience, but I also want to spend carefully since I'll need to save for the upgrade. I'm considering selling my current system and building a new AM5 machine with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RTX 5070 Ti, and 32GB of DDR5. I'm also looking at the Radeon RX 9070 XT, although this would be my first AMD graphics card. NVIDIA's DLSS features are appealing to me, and I expect support for them to continue improving. Would a complete platform upgrade be worthwhile, or would I get better value by upgrading the graphics card first and keeping my current CPU and motherboard for a while?

The 5700X is not the urgent upgrade here; the RTX 3060 is. A high-end graphics card paired with your current CPU should be a substantial jump from your existing performance. In many GPU-heavy games, moving to a 9800X3D immediately would add less practical benefit than spending that money on the graphics card.

A stronger GPU such as the RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT should provide a noticeable improvement without the expense of replacing the motherboard and memory. If you still want more CPU performance later, a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D would let you get more life out of the AM4 platform.

For 1440p gaming, keeping the 5700X and putting the money into the GPU makes the most sense. A system with a 5700X and RX 9070 XT can already run games very well, and you may find that you have no desire to move to AM5 afterward. You could wait a couple of years for CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 prices to become more attractive.

Upgrade the graphics card first. The Ryzen 7 5700X is still capable for 1440p, while the RTX 3060 is much more likely to be the part holding you back. After seeing how the new GPU performs, you can decide whether a CPU or platform upgrade is actually necessary.
