Hey everyone! I recently started building a new PC and decided to switch to Linux Mint for its user-friendly interface and software management. I've been enjoying my experience so far, but I've run into a frustrating issue. When my CPU is idling, the temperature sits around 45°C with just 1% usage, which seems a bit warm but manageable. However, anytime I push it over 15% load, it starts thermal throttling and skyrockets to 85°C, and the fan noise is incredibly loud. I feel like the CPU should handle these temperatures without a problem, and I don't think my fan should be working that hard.
I've already tried installing Fan Control, checked my CPU cooler seating, and reapplied thermal paste, but nothing seems to help. I'm at a loss, and I'd love to hear any suggestions you might have on how to troubleshoot this issue.
Here are my specs:
- Asus TUF B650 Pro WiFi
- AMD 9700X cooled by Deepcool AK400
- Nvidia RTX 5070ti
- 32GB Kingston DDR5 6000MHz
- 2TB NVMe M.2 and 2TB SATA SSD
- 3TB HDD
Thanks in advance for your help!

This sounds like more of a cooler installation issue rather than a Linux problem. Mistakes can happen, so double-check if your CPU cooler is mounted properly. If it’s not seated correctly, it could lead to poor thermal performance. Also consider checking for any BIOS updates that might help with thermal management. Sometimes, it’s not just about the temperature but also how effectively the cooler can dissipate heat.
Before you try anything else, it might help to test the CPU under Windows temporarily to see if the issue persists there. This could rule out hardware problems. If it runs fine on Windows, it may indicate a driver issue or some missing configurations in Linux.
Are you certain the thermal throttling is being caused by high temperatures? You might want to check your clock speeds and CPU load using a tool like `s-tui`. The AMD 9700X has a tjmax of 95°C, so while 85°C is indeed high, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s throttling. Also, keep in mind that modern CPUs can run hotter, especially under load. If everything else is fine, the issue might be with how well your cooler is working.
