What’s the Deal with My Monitor’s Refresh Rate?

I recently bought a ViewSonic monitor from Amazon that was advertised as having a refresh rate of 180Hz. However, the box it came in stated 165Hz. When I powered it on, it showed only 144Hz. I tried using the overclocking feature on the monitor itself, which allowed it to reach 165Hz, but when I used the AMD software to set it manually to 180Hz, Windows accepted it and displayed it as 180Hz. I'm confused about whether this monitor can actually handle 180Hz. Should I return it since the box showed mismatched info and arrived in terrible condition? I rely on my monitor for work, and waiting 20 days for a return is not ideal. Any suggestions? Also, is there any chance Amazon will compensate for this? I have another ViewSonic monitor that also claims 180Hz, and it showed 165Hz initially but successfully reached 180Hz with overclocking, unlike this one.

Can you tell us the exact model? It might help to determine if it’s known for any refresh rate issues or quirks. Some models can be tricky!

Sure! It's the ViewSonic VX2479. I have another one from the same brand that claimed 180Hz, and after some tweaking, I got it to work.

It sounds like the monitor may be limited by the type of cable you’re using. Some monitors need specific cables like DisplayPort to reach their maximum refresh rates. Have you checked if you’re using a compatible cable?

Yeah, DisplayPort is usually better for high refresh rates. HDMI can struggle a bit with anything over 165Hz at 1080p.

If you're using HDMI, make sure it's the correct version. Some older HDMI cables can't handle high refresh rates. You might need to switch to a DisplayPort cable for optimal performance. It’s also worth reaching out to Amazon about the return issue since the box was damaged.

I’m using an HDMI cable. Maybe I should consider upgrading to DisplayPort.
