Why Can’t My 2018 MacBook Pro Update Beyond High Sierra?

Hey there! I've been dealing with a long-standing issue on my 2018 MacBook Pro, which is currently running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. I usually don't mind updates, but this one has me stumped. When I try to check for software updates, I only see a list of incompatible updates and nothing for the OS itself. I know my Mac is capable of being updated beyond High Sierra since it's not that old, and it still runs really well for my editing work. I have plenty of storage space available (108.77 GB out of 250.69 GB). Any advice on how I can get this updated would be greatly appreciated!

I’m currently doing a macOS recovery startup using option + command + R, and it seems to be configuring the latest compatible version, which it suggests will be macOS Catalina. I’ve been told this will take about three hours, but I hope it’s the right step! Any thoughts?

Even though waiting can be frustrating, installing Catalina (10.15) first and then upgrading to Sequoia (15) might be the easiest route. I’ve encountered situations where older macOS versions required an intermediary update before getting to the latest one. It could be that your current setup needs an updated bootloader first.

A 2018 MacBook Pro should be able to update to macOS Sequoia (15.x). If updates aren't appearing, it’s worth checking Apple's page on how to install or update macOS. One of the easier methods could be using the macOS App Store to download the latest version instead of relying solely on the Software Update feature.
