I bought a Chinese model iPhone 15 when it first came out, and I'm considering upgrading to the iPhone 17, which only uses eSIM. I know that the Chinese version doesn't support eSIM, but I'm curious if I can transfer my physical SIM from the iPhone 15 to the new eSIM-only iPhone 17.

Most carriers in places like the US allow you to swap your physical SIM for an eSIM during the new iPhone's setup. This feature makes it super easy! It’s all done automatically if your carrier supports it.
To make that transfer happen, you’ll need your carrier to issue the eSIM for the new phone. So yes, the transfer is possible, but you’ll have to go through your provider, not just the iPhone's built-in eSIM transfer during setup.
When I switched from my X to a 15 Pro, I was able to transfer my physical SIM to eSIM pretty seamlessly. You just approve it on your old phone, and it handles the rest. But just keep in mind, this depends a lot on your carrier.
