Seeking Advice on Buying a Zorin Laptop for My Mom

I'm looking to buy my mom a new laptop since her old Chromebook had a reset password problem that erased all her local files. She primarily uses it for paying bills, but it's becoming outdated, so I want to upgrade her. I found some refurbished laptops with Zorin Linux pre-installed on eBay, and I'm considering one of those. I want to know if there's anything specific to watch out for when purchasing pre-installed Linux laptops, as my mom is almost 50 and I hope to make the transition as smooth as possible for her.

If your mom is accustomed to using a Chromebook and it's serving her well, it might be better just to get her another Chromebook. Have you worked with Linux before? If you buy a Linux laptop, you might find yourself being her tech support!

I'd recommend looking for a compatible model and installing Linux yourself. I'm a bit cautious about pre-installed systems, whether it's Windows or Linux. The key is checking the seller’s reviews. Sometimes, people sell devices without ensuring they work correctly, and you don't want to be stuck with a lemon.

Why not just install Zorin on her old Chromebook? It could be a more cost-effective solution if you really want to go that route. But remember, if her Chromebook needs upgrading to run ChromeOS, Zorin might be a stretch for it.

I appreciate the suggestion! I thought about that, but I figured it may struggle with Zorin if it can't handle ChromeOS smoothly.

Considering your mom's needs and experience, buying her a new Chromebook in the $200-$300 range seems like the way to go. She won’t have to learn a new system, and you won’t have to troubleshoot any issues. It's designed for online tasks that older users tend to enjoy, just like several of my friends have found with their Chromebooks!

I found it curious when you mentioned 50 as 'old.' My dad's 91 and uses tech regularly. It’s all about adaptability! You’d be surprised what your mom could handle.

So true! My mom started using her smartphone in her 70s and learned fast. Age is just a number when it comes to tech!

Honestly, I wouldn’t risk buying a used laptop with pre-installed Linux. I'm just going to wipe it clean anyway and install my own OS. That way I know what I'm getting!
