Why is my new iPhone overheating even when it’s turned off?

I recently purchased an iPhone 17 for my wife, and after the first charge, it started to overheat. I thought it might be a software issue, so we disabled services like iCloud, but it didn't make a difference. The device was still getting really hot, so we powered it down to cool off, but it continued to overheat and drained the battery completely in just an hour. Although the battery health indicator shows normal, this raised concerns about a potential hardware problem. We took it to an Apple Store, where they ran diagnostics and found nothing wrong. However, the phone remains very hot to the touch, and the technician made a comment about engines getting hot when they run. They reset the device, but the issue persists. I was told to return if it continues after a few days. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a common issue with new phones, and does it usually resolve itself?

Sometimes overheating is a sign of a battery defect. If you suspect malware or something unusual, definitely keep an eye on it and maybe have it replaced under warranty if it continues.

The diagnostics didn’t show any issues. I agree, since it’s a brand-new device, malware seems unlikely, but I'll keep it in mind.

It’s not uncommon for phones to run hotter during initial setup due to indexing, but if it’s hot enough that you can't hold it, that’s a problem. It might be worth checking back to Apple for a replacement if they can't find an issue after diagnostics.

I already went to the Apple Store, but they said everything was normal. I don’t think an hour of battery life is acceptable, though.

Have you seen any temperature warning notifications on your phone? Also, does it behave differently during use, like charging or processing? New devices can be a bit warm due to heavy indexing at first, but it shouldn't be excessive.

Yes, I saw a notification saying "Charging will continue after the iPhone returns to normal temperature" during charging, which seems concerning.

It's odd that your phone gets hot even when it's off unless it’s not truly powered down or is in a hot environment. Make sure you really shut it down. Otherwise, it sounds like a potential battery issue if it is overheating while off. Monitor it closely!

We did shut it down completely, but I wonder if there's something internal that's still running.
