Should I Upgrade to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D or Go for the 7800X3D?

I've been considering upgrading my CPU since some of my games are struggling to hit 60+ fps at 4K resolution. Currently, I'm using the Ryzen 7 5800X with an RTX 4080 Super and I'm worried it might not be enough. I've been looking at the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D and wondering if the performance boost would be worth the investment. Alternatively, there's also the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, but that means I'd need a new motherboard and RAM, which would increase the cost significantly. I'm hoping to get better consistency in gameplay since my lowest fps can drop to 30 or have noticeable stuttering. I've noticed that reducing the resolution to 2K solves these issues, so I'm leaning towards making an upgrade. Should I save up for the 7800X3D or just get the 5800X3D?

Upgrading to the 5800X3D could give you about a 20-40% boost in performance, but they're pretty sought after lately due to supply issues, so expect to pay around $400. On the other hand, if you go for the 7800X3D, it’ll cost you about $600-700 include a new motherboard and RAM, which is a bigger investment. However, it would maximize your 4080’s potential. If you don't have a Micro Center nearby, you might be looking at a total of $900-1000. Check PCPartPicker for the latest prices!

Thanks for the info! Do you think it's really worth going for the 7800X3D if I'm trying to avoid a big budget? I might just lean towards the 5800X3D if it's sufficient.

I appreciate the breakdown! I definitely want to avoid overspending, so the 5800X3D sounds like a sensible option.

Stick with your AM4 platform and upgrade to the 5800X3D if smooth gaming performance is your main goal right now. The 5700X and 5800X3D are still highly regarded for gaming and tend to be in demand, especially used. If you're primarily gaming, the 5800X3D will be a cost-effective choice over switching to AM5 for the moment.

Thanks for the tip! I'm also looking to start streaming and recording videos for YouTube, so I need something balanced for gaming and light streaming.

Future proofing is always tempting, but if you'd rather not break the bank immediately, the 5800X3D seems like a solid go-to.
