I received an iPhone 12 Pro Max as a graduation gift back in late 2020 but never opened it because I was still using my iPhone 8. Recently, I broke my iPhone 8 and decided to look into my unopened 12 Pro Max. It's been sitting untouched in its box for 5 years. I'm worried about how well it will work, especially considering its battery condition. Does anyone have experience with using a device that's been stored for so long?

Apple suggests charging lithium-ion batteries to about 50% every six months if you're storing a device long-term. Given it's been 5 years, there's a good chance your battery might not take a charge anymore. Unfortunately, since the warranty has expired, you may need to shell out around $89 for a battery replacement to get it up and running again.
Sounds like you’ve got a dead battery. It might still charge, but don’t expect it to hold any power for long.
Honestly, it’s a bit regrettable to save a phone for so long. You could have sold it and bought a new one when you actually needed it. Now you have an outdated phone with a potentially bad battery. Just keep that in mind for the future!
Best of luck! Just so you know, if the phone is really in new condition, some collectors might be interested in buying it off you.
Wow, storing it for that long seems risky! Just so you know, avoid upgrading to iOS 18 or 26 if you manage to get it working.
