Why Is My Laptop Suddenly Dropping to Low FPS While Gaming?

I've been experiencing some serious FPS drops on my laptop lately. Normally, it can deliver around 120 FPS in games like Fortnite and Phasmophobia when it's plugged in. However, starting last week, I've been seeing FPS as low as 4-10 even when connected to power. My laptop has an i7 10th-gen processor, a GTX 1650 with 4 GB of VRAM, and 20 GB of RAM. I've already checked for viruses, updated my graphics drivers, and set the NVIDIA driver to high performance within the control panel. I also ran a GPU stress test, which showed 144 FPS. Despite this, my games aren't reflecting that performance. Any ideas on what's going wrong?

Even though you mentioned setting the NVIDIA GPU as the main one, double-check its usage during gameplay. I had a similar issue where my games weren’t picking up the NVIDIA card, and I had to recheck the settings. It might help to see what your performance monitor shows while playing to ensure the system's actually leveraging the NVIDIA GPU.

It sounds like your laptop might be using the integrated GPU (iGPU) instead of the NVIDIA one. While you're gaming, you should monitor the GPU usage in Task Manager. If the NVIDIA graphics card shows very low or zero usage, that's your issue. You can force your laptop to always use the NVIDIA GPU by going to the NVIDIA Control Panel. Under 'Manage 3D Settings,' set the global settings to use 'High-performance NVIDIA processor,' or you can customize it for specific games under the 'Program Settings' tab.
