How Can I Tell If My Motherboard Is Dead?

My PC just blue screened, and now there's no display. It powers on, but nothing is happening—though the fans and lights are working. I've got an Asus Z-170 P motherboard, a GTX 1070Ti, an i7 6700k processor, and 2x 8GB HyperX Fury RAM. Any ideas on how I can figure out if my motherboard is dead?

First thing to check is the CMOS battery—an empty battery might be causing issues. Try clearing the CMOS by short-circuiting it or replacing the battery altogether. If that doesn’t work, it’s worth considering that the RAM or motherboard could be the problem.

I already reset the CMOS, but no luck. My brother thinks it might be the RAM or motherboard. I’d like to buy replacements, but I'm in school and in foster care, so I'm not sure what I should do.

You might want to start by checking for crash logs from the blue screen. If you can get into Windows (or Safe Mode), look for dump files in the C:WindowsMinidump folder. You can zip them up and upload them to a file-sharing site, which will help with diagnosing the issue. If there aren’t any files, you could follow some guides to change your dump settings. It could give you more info on what’s going on.
