How Can I Set Up a Wired Internet Connection for My Computer?

I'm applying for a job that requires a reliable internet connection, and I'm not quite sure how to connect my computer to the internet using a wired connection. I have a WiFi router in my living room, but my computer is in the next room. Should I just get a really long Ethernet cable to connect them, or would it be better to move the router? If moving the router is the way to go, how will I know if there's a proper outlet for it in the computer room? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you're comfortable running the long cable, that's probably the easiest way to go. Just plug it into the LAN port on your router and then into your computer. It should work just fine without moving the router. I don't see any harm in trying it out.

For your setup, you can definitely just use a long Ethernet cable. It's best to go with at least a Cat5e cable, but Cat6 is even better. Running the cable along the baseboards is a good idea if you want to avoid drilling holes. Make sure it’s not too long—Ethernet cables can be up to 328 feet, which should be plenty for most situations. If you need a more professional look, consider hiring an installer to put in a wall outlet, but that might be more work than you want to deal with in a rented apartment.

Thanks for the tip! I think I’ll go with the long cable since it’s a rental.

Just to clarify, it sounds like your job specifically requires a wired connection, which is fairly common in certain fields, especially where secure data handling is involved. Since you mentioned Turbo Tax customer service, they likely want to ensure a stable and secure connection. So just using a long cable should do the trick!

Yep! They specified a wired connection, so I want to make sure everything is set up right.
