I'm trying to install Linux on a USB stick that I formatted into two partitions: one about 8GB for the Linux installation, and the rest for storing my data. Is this a safe setup? Can I install Linux on the 8GB partition without losing everything on the other partition? I'm new to this and would appreciate any insights. Also, what software should I use for the installation? I've come across Etcher and Ventoy, but I'm not sure which one to choose since I'm currently a Windows user.

It's definitely more straightforward to use a separate drive for installing Linux. Given that USB drives often have limited space and speed, consider using another USB stick if you can. It’ll save you a lot of hassle.
If you're just writing the installation ISO to the USB, then it will wipe the whole drive, which means you’ll lose your data. If you install Linux from another source directly to that USB, it might work, but 8GB is pretty small for a proper installation, and you could run into issues later on.
Make sure to plan this out carefully! If you do still want to proceed with what you have, you can try a portable Linux distro that can run without needing a full installation, but be aware that performance might not be the best.
