Why Is SMS So Complicated for Sending Alerts?

Lately, I've been trying to sort out our tier 0 alerts because Slack notifications are just too overwhelming at 3 AM. However, I'm running into some serious carrier red tape regarding SMS. Our "low volume" 10dlc campaigns keep getting stuck in manual review for weeks! I'm experimenting with an API that handles compliance automatically, so we can send alerts through instantly. I'm curious—how are others managing priority alerts in 2026? Are you dealing with carriers head-on, or have you found ways to outsource compliance?

We just rely on email for alerts. The major carriers are already blocking a lot of mass SMS due to spam and scams, so it’s not worth the hassle.

In my organization, we switched from SMS a decade ago. We primarily use Slack and email now, with WhatsApp notifications as well.

Carriers have been cracking down on SMS spam for quite some time now. With the STIR/SHAKEN framework being implemented in the telephone network, they're really starting to enforce regulations on high-volume SMS. Bulk senders have to register now, and they've also been shutting down email-to-SMS gateways since those have been major sources of spam. Instead of SMS, consider platforms like PagerDuty, Jira Service Management, or Pulseway, or even use messaging services like Slack or Teams with WebHooks for alerts.

Exactly! Spammers really ruin the game for everyone.

I have to say, SMS is an outdated method. If it's important, you should really use a dedicated alerting platform like PagerDuty.
