Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my gaming PC and I need some advice on the best CPU for achieving high frame rates at 1080p. My current setup includes a GTX 3080, an Intel i7-9700k, and 32 GB of RAM. I'm aiming for around 240 to 360 FPS, and I'm aware that my CPU is the bottleneck in this setup. I've seen a lot of recommendations for the Ryzen 9 9800X3D, but I'm curious if there are better options out there. Also, should I consider upgrading to a 1440p monitor in the future? Cheers!

The 9800X3D is definitely the top choice for gaming right now! It’s known for its impressive performance, especially at 1080p. You're likely to see a significant boost in frame rates with it compared to your current CPU.
You should also consider the Intel 12700K or 13700K if you're okay with using DDR4 RAM, as they can deliver solid performance. Newer games can be quite demanding, and even with upscalers, they may not hit 240-360 Hz without the right setup. It’s worth checking out video reviews to see how your current card handles modern titles.
I’m intrigued by the Intel options, especially since I’m already using Intel. What are the advantages of going that route over Ryzen?
If you’re focusing on 1080p gaming, the 9800X3D is the way to go. The difference with the 9950X3D mainly comes down to cost and use case. The 9950 is faster mainly for productivity and multitasking, but for gaming, the 9800X3D performs slightly better due to lower latency.
Thanks for clarifying that! Since gaming is my main focus, I’ll stick with the 9800X3D. I also do some light recording and editing; will that be okay with it?
With your GTX 3080, you might want to consider upgrading to a 12th generation Intel CPU or the Ryzen 5000 series to avoid bottlenecking. The i7-9700k can limit your FPS at higher refresh rates since it struggles a bit at 1080p with demanding titles.
I eventually plan to upgrade the GPU too. I just want to set myself up for success with the best CPU now!

That seems to be the consensus! What makes the 9800X3D better than the Ryzen 9950X3D though?
