Hey everyone, and happy holidays! I think I might have made a mistake trying to save some cash on my motherboard, and I'm wondering if it could be the reason I'm experiencing really low FPS in games. Here's my setup: I have an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X CPU, an AMD 7900XTX GPU, and 64GB of G.Skill DDR5 RAM running at 6000MHz, with a 1000W PSU. I ended up getting the ASUS PRIME A620M-A-CSM motherboard.
Lately, I've noticed some inconsistent performance while gaming; my FPS is all over the place. For instance, I'm getting around 170-190 FPS in Battlefield 6, while a buddy with a similar CPU but a B650 motherboard is hitting 220+ FPS with a lower-end GPU. My biggest issue is how my FPS fluctuates wildly—sometimes it dips to 60-70 FPS, then shoots up to 150+. I heard that the A620 motherboard might not be the best fit for high-performance 9000 series AMD CPUs and is more suited for lower-end setups. Any advice or insights would be appreciated!

It wouldn’t surprise me if your friend is playing on lower settings or using some advanced graphics tech that you’re not. The A620 only offers PCIe Gen4, which is fine for most of your setup, but if he's on lower settings, that could boost his FPS significantly. Have you checked video settings in BF6? A few tweaks there could help you out, plus looking into some guides online can really make a difference.
Going with the A620 might have been a misjudgment for a high-end CPU like the 9700X. If you want optimal performance, you might consider an upgrade eventually, especially if you continue to see fluctuating FPS across games.
I appreciate your input! I realize now that the 620 chipset may not be the best for my setup. If you have any further insights about overall performance with this chipset, I'd love to hear them.
I’d recommend downloading HWInfo to monitor the VRM temperatures. If the temps are high, that could definitely be affecting your performance. Sometimes, budget boards struggle under heavier loads, so keeping an eye on those temps is key.
Thanks for the tip! All temps look good so far with my CPU and GPU around 70, and the motherboard at about 50 under load. Still not sure why I'm experiencing these FPS issues.
If those temps are okay, might be worth checking airflow around the board. Sometimes a little cooling can help.

We both actually tested with the same BF6 settings at 2K resolution. So far, I can't pinpoint what's going wrong.
