Feeling Like an Outsider in a New DevOps Job

Hey everyone! I'm new to my job, just a few months into a full-time role after interning with my team. I felt really confused during my internship, but I worked on personal projects to fill in some gaps in my knowledge. Now, I feel somewhat competent, but I'm struggling with the vast amount of knowledge required in DevOps. My team seems to excel at automating tasks and finding solutions, which leaves me feeling like I'm not keeping up. I've been learning about RHEL, containerization, CI/CD, AWS, and more, but I often overlook small details in my work, even though I consider myself organized. I'm sure I just need more experience, but I'm eager for tips on how to cope with imposter syndrome, improve my organization skills, and gain confidence in my abilities. Also, my team is remote but nice, and I appreciate the support I get from them!

You’re definitely not alone! Many feel that DevOps isn't easy for beginners because there's a lot of ground to cover. Everyone makes mistakes, but the key is to learn from them and implement a system to avoid repeating them. It sounds like your team is understanding, which is great! Have you tried creating a checklist for your tasks? It can really help keep you on track with updating tickets and more.

That's a fantastic idea! I started using a checklist too, and it's made a difference. My team is mostly supportive, but there's one person who's a bit tough to deal with. Still, I'm just glad most of them are quick to help!

You’re not alone in feeling this way! I’m in the same boat and can relate to your struggles. Just know it’s totally normal to feel overwhelmed at the start.

This field can be tough, since some people can be egocentric or condescending. Just remember, regardless of how experienced you are, there will always be critics. Keep learning and growing—you're doing great!

Thanks for the encouragement! It really helps to hear that.

I’ve been in a similar situation too! The best advice I can give is to stay curious and find a niche you enjoy—focusing on something specific really helped me land a better job with higher pay.

Interesting! What niche did you end up choosing?

I totally get the imposter syndrome—it’s super common in early DevOps careers! Focus on learning quickly instead of aiming for perfection. The more you ask questions and understand why things are automated, the better you’ll grasp the patterns over time. Hang in there; it gets easier!

You’re in a great position to learn. DevOps is broad, and you’ll always find something new to tackle. I’ve had interns in a similar situation who went on to do fantastic things. Just remember, it’s okay not to know everything right away!

Thanks! You're right—I’ve come a long way already. I should focus on my progress rather than comparing myself to others.
