I've been out of the loop since 2021, and I'm curious if people are still using YouTube-DL. If so, what's the best way to install it now? I remember the version from the repository had issues when I last tried it.

You really should switch to yt-dlp instead of youtube-dl now. Plus, make sure to update it regularly!
Yeah, people are still using it! I've switched to an app called Seal on my phone, which is a GUI for yt-dlp. It's pretty handy if you're on the go! I don't really need it on my PC anymore, though.
There was quite a mess a couple of years back that impacted both youtube-dl and yt-dlp. You might want to check out this article for more context on those changes: [how to use youtube-dl](https://www.wikihow.com/Use-Youtube%E2%80%90dl). YouTube has tightened access to its servers, making it tougher for these apps to work.
I'm running Debian 13, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that yt-dlp installed automatically during the net installer setup. It's nice to see that support for it is getting better!
If you’re on macOS, just use Homebrew with the command `brew install yt-dlp`. Just a heads up, make sure you have Homebrew installed first. This method keeps you updated because the repos can be pretty outdated.
