Why is my high-spec PC running so slow?

I've got a pretty powerful PC that should be quick, but it's performing like it's from the stone age. Here are my specs:

- **CPU:** Intel Core i7-7700K @ 4.2 GHz
- **RAM:** 32 GB
- **Storage:** 1.82 TB HDD, 238 GB SSD, plus another SSD
- **GPU:** NVIDIA GTX 1080 (8 GB)
- **System:** 64-bit Windows

All my drives have plenty of free space, and there's no pen or touch input. The slowdown occurs when I'm doing anything, not just while gaming - whether I'm opening apps or browsing. I'm at a loss for whether it's a software or hardware issue.

Here's what I've tried:
- Scanning for malware
- Ensured my drives aren't full
- Checked for background apps using excessive resources

Any advice on what could be causing the slowdown and how to fix it would really help!

Just a heads up, your CPU is from 2017. It's getting a bit dated compared to newer processors. Even with decent specs, the age of the hardware can affect performance, especially if you’re multitasking.

Make sure your C drive has enough free space. Windows needs a bit of room to run efficiently, so if it's full, that's likely causing your lag. I once had a similar issue when my storage was almost maxed out.

I've got about 45 GB free on my C drive, which I think should be okay.

First off, have you checked your CPU and GPU temperatures? If they’re too high, that could cause throttling and slow down your system. Also, did it always run this slow or did this just start recently?

I believe the temps are fine, got regular and water cooling. It's been slow for a while, not just recently.

It sounds like your HDD might be failing, which can significantly slow everything down. Try running a health check on your drives or disconnect the HDD and see if that helps.

Also, have you considered checking your power settings? Make sure it’s set to high performance. If your PSU isn't delivering enough power, that could definitely impact performance too.

Check which drive Windows is installed on; if it's on the hard drive, that could be a big factor in speed. Ideally, you want your OS on the SSD for better performance!

Windows is installed on the SSD.
