How Can I Improve My Skills and Land a Junior Sysadmin Job?

Hey folks! I'm in the final stages of my Higher Diploma in Network Systems Administration in Spain. Despite having a strong grasp of networking protocols like DNS and DHCP, and some programming experience in languages such as Python and JavaScript, I'm struggling to get a junior sysadmin position. I've completed simple coding exercises, but I want to build real projects to showcase my skills. I'm working on a blog using GitHub Pages, focusing on topics like OpenLDAP and DHCP servers, and I think about getting a domain name to make my CV stand out.

Time is limited, and I really want to know how to better utilize my learning to improve my job prospects in this competitive field. I also speak Spanish and English and I'm learning French to further differentiate myself. Additionally, I'm considering prioritizing relevant skills over chasing top honors in school. Any advice or project ideas that could help me become a more well-rounded candidate would be greatly appreciated!

The job market can be tough, especially entry-level positions in Spain. Make sure to finish your ASIR degree and consider following it up with some cybersecurity courses. This will not only enhance your skill set but also make you more marketable.

I hear you! After 13 years in sysadmin roles, I’d recommend some key steps: Finish your diploma for better pay scales, keep learning that third language, and set short-term goals to avoid burnout. Also, don't undervalue helpdesk jobs—they’re stepping stones that teach you essential skills, like user interaction and a broader understanding of IT environments.

If you decide to pursue helpdesk work, learning PowerShell can be a game-changer. It's a powerful tool that many sysadmins use, and expanding your skills in it could open up more opportunities for you later on.

Why not dive into exploring security vulnerabilities on your system? It's not just educational; it can also be a valuable topic for your blog. You'll gain knowledge about risks and how to mitigate them, which is super relevant right now!
