Is Amazon S3 a good alternative to Google Drive for storage?

I'm not very familiar with AWS services, so forgive me if I sound clueless! I've been using Google Drive, but the free storage is pretty limited and I'm ready to pay a little to get more space. I was wondering if I can use Amazon S3 instead. Is that feasible? What would be the pros, cons, and any challenges I might face?

If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, it comes with 1TB of cloud backup, which could be a great alternative to think about instead of moving to AWS.

You could even set up an EC2 instance with something like Nextcloud for your needs, and use S3 just for backup. It's important to calculate the costs of data egress separately when comparing options!

If you're not already comfortable with AWS, I'd suggest sticking with Google Drive. It's simpler and less likely to result in unexpected costs. AWS can rack up bills quickly if you're transferring lots of data or making mistakes when you set it up.

Another option to consider is Backblaze B2 with ownCloud; it's cheaper than S3 and offers the first 10GB for free, along with free egress! This could save you some money if you're looking for a reliable alternative.

Yes, you can definitely use S3! **Pros:** It's cost-effective once you get past the free tier, and you can choose storage options that work for you. **Cons:** It's not an easy plug-and-play solution. You'll likely need to experiment with different clients to access your files effectively, and configuring it securely can be tricky. Plus, solid support from AWS usually comes at an extra cost.
