Help Needed to Get New GPU Working with My Son’s PC

My 12-year-old son built a gaming PC back in June and used a second-hand GPU. For Christmas, he received a new Vandossy Radeon RX 5700 XT GPU but we've been struggling to get it to work. We spent the whole day troubleshooting but can't seem to get a signal. The motherboard is an AMD B550-A Pro, and right now we're using the HDMI plugged into the CPU. We used a different PCIe cable as the original one was too short, and I'm wondering if that's causing the issue. Oddly enough, he noticed some graphics improvements in a game even though the HDMI is not connected to the new GPU yet. He also followed the driver installation instructions that came with the GPU. Now, the monitor shows 'no signal,' and nothing changes even when we switch HDMI to the GPU. The fans are running, so we think the power supply (which is 650W) is adequate. We've tried two GPU slots without any luck. Does anyone have advice or need more info? Thank you!

There might be a power supply issue at play here. You can't just swap out graphics cards without considering the power demands. Can you explain how you've connected the short cable? Also, when you plug the monitor into the new GPU, what happens? Do you get any response?

When we connect the HDMI to the GPU, the monitor just shows 'no input.' Plus, the fans on the GPU are working, so we're unsure if it's a power issue or something else.

It sounds like you might be using the wrong cable to connect the GPU to the power supply. Make sure you're using the dedicated PCI-E cables when connecting the GPU; those are specially designed to deliver the right amount of power. Can you share the details or a picture of the cable you're currently using?

Sure, I've got some pics here: https://imgur.com/a/RzcAGEx. He’s using the longer one without any yellow connectors. Let me know if that looks okay!

Make sure to double-check all the specs of your setup, including the PSU and CPU. I once bought a GPU that turned out to be DOA, so don’t lose hope! Just look at everything carefully before concluding you have a faulty GPU.

Good point! I’ll get the full specs together tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up!

It’s worth noting that most AM4 processors don't have integrated graphics, which explains the 'no signal' when connected to the motherboard. If you want to troubleshoot further, you’d need to have both GPUs connected to get any output.

That’s strange because it was working with the CPU HDMI for a bit. Do you really think it's a faulty GPU or could it be something else?
