How to Fix Audio Problem When Using an HDMI Splitter with a TV and PC

I'm having trouble with audio when I connect my parents' basic Windows 11 PC to a TV via an HDMI splitter. The PC, which has only integrated graphics and a single HDMI port, connects to the splitter, which is meant to send the signal to both the PC screen and the TV. However, when both devices are connected, I don't see the option to output audio through HDMI; it only shows the option for the 3.5mm speakers. If I disconnect the PC screen, the option for the TV appears as expected. I'm wondering if the issue is related to how HDMI reports audio capabilities or if there's a way to force Windows to recognize the TV as an audio output when both screens are connected.

It sounds like the splitter might be causing the PC to only recognize the lowest common audio option. Sometimes, when multiple outputs are detected, Windows defaults to the one it considers primary, which in this case seems to be the PC screen without audio capabilities. Have you tried connecting the HDMI splitter first to see if it resolves the issue? Also, make sure that the PC screen and TV can both support audio over HDMI simultaneously. If not, you might need a different splitter that explicitly supports dual audio outputs.

Typically, HDMI audio issues can occur if the devices aren’t communicating properly. You should check the settings in Windows under Sound. By right-clicking on the speaker icon in the taskbar, you can manage your audio devices. If the TV doesn’t appear while both screens are connected, it’s likely the splitter isn't forwarding audio correctly. Try a different splitter or adjust settings in the BIOS, if you're comfortable doing that.

Using an HDMI splitter is a smart way to avoid constantly switching cables! However, splitters can sometimes be finicky about audio. Since they can confuse the computer about which device is the main one, I'd recommend testing with a powered splitter, which sometimes has better audio handling capabilities. Also, ensuring that both display devices are turned on before booting the PC can help with detection.
