Which Intel CPU Should I Choose for My Upgraded PC?

I'm looking to upgrade my 9-year-old PC, which currently has an i5-6600, 64GB DDR4 RAM, and an RTX 4070. I'm getting a B760 DDR4 motherboard and will be reusing everything else, like my RAM, GPU, SSD, HDD, and even the PSU if possible. My main tasks will be software development, light VM and container usage, and mid-tier gaming. While my current setup works well for gaming, the old CPU is really dragging on development work. I'm considering several Intel CPUs within my budget: the i5-12400, 13400F, 14400, 14600K, and possibly stretching for the i7-14700 if it's worth it. I'm not aiming to overclock and need something that doesn't produce too much heat—I've heard the 12400 is a solid choice for this reason.

Just a heads up, you'll want to watch out for heat if you're going with the 14700K. A slight undervolt with power limiting should keep temps manageable. Just ensure your cooler can handle the 180-190 TDP.

Would the regular 14700 be a good choice over the K version, considering my needs?

For most users, the 14600K is a great value, but if you’re not going to use features like integrated graphics or overclocking, the 14600F is a better option. Also, if the pricing is similar, consider the i7-14700, which gives a nice performance boost without breaking the bank!

Yeah, I noticed the i7-14700 is almost the same price but can't find the 14600F anywhere right now.

I'd recommend the 14600K out of the ones you listed. Although it does require more power (125W) compared to the others only needing 65W, it's a strong performer, especially if you undervolt it a bit. Just ensure your motherboard's BIOS is updated, and you should be good!

If I use the 14600K on a B760 motherboard without overclocking, will it need more power? I've read conflicting info about this.
