Hey folks, I'm looking for some advice on whether I should upgrade anything in my PC. Here's what I have:
- AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
- NVIDIA RTX 3070 8GB
- 32GB DDR4 RAM
- 750W Seasonic Focus PSU
- B550 Asrock Steel Legend Motherboard
- Three 1440P monitors
I mostly game, but I also dabble in Adobe After Effects, Premiere, and Blender, and I'm not completely satisfied with the performance of those applications. It's about a 70/30 or even 80/20 split between gaming and productivity.
My game performance isn't where I want it to be either. I noticed that a 5700X3D is cheaper than a 5900XT right now. I missed my chance on the 5800X3D, so I'm wondering:
- Would upgrading to a 5700X3D significantly boost my productivity and gaming?
- If the 5700X3D isn't worth it for gaming, would a 5900XT make a difference in productivity?
- Should I just invest in a new GPU, like the 5070 TI, for better CUDA performance?
- Any concerns with my PSU?
- Or should I hold off on upgrading altogether?

Generally, a new GPU will give you higher average frames per second, while a new CPU might improve your minimum frame rates. It really comes down to what you're aiming for. Also, knowing the games you play and the resolutions you're targeting would help make a better recommendation, though!
Upgrading to a 5700X3D probably won't give you a significant boost in either gaming or productivity. Most likely, your system is GPU bottlenecked rather than CPU bottlenecked for the games you're playing. If you're looking into productivity, try checking how often your CPU hits 100% while working on your projects. For most of the Adobe suite and Blender, you'll find that more cores are helpful, but rendering relies heavily on your GPU, not your CPU.
That makes sense, but I'm curious about productivity. I've heard people say that a 5900X or 5950X really shine in After Effects. Have you worked with those before?
Good point! It sounds like performance is really dependent on what you're doing at the time.
