My PC is in recovery mode after a power outage—what should I do?

I experienced a power outage while my computer was running, and now it's asking for a recovery key to access the system. The thing is, my PC crashes after about 6 minutes of being on, and I think my dad knows the recovery key since he built it. I'm looking for advice on what steps to take next and what issues my PC might be facing.

It sounds like the power outage triggered the BitLocker key request since it can happen after an unexpected shutdown. That part is normal. However, the crashing after a few minutes may indicate a different problem—possibly a fried power supply unit (PSU) or motherboard if you weren’t using a surge protector. Let’s see if it still crashes after entering the recovery key.

It's good to consider investing in an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for the future. It helps protect against power outages and surges, which can save your hardware from damage. Just a thought for next time!

I recommend checking if your dad set up the computer with his Microsoft Account. He might be able to recover the BitLocker key online. If that wasn't the case and the key was never backed up, you may have to format the drive and reinstall Windows, which is a last resort if your data isn't recoverable.
