I have a friend's phone number, but they don't use WhatsApp, and we live in different countries. They have an iPhone, and I'm using an Android device. What's the best way to send messages and make calls without getting hit with international fees?

Any social media platform can work too! Just find one that you both like, and it could be easier for regular chats without fees.
You might want to suggest they set up WhatsApp. It’s pretty popular and should work well for what you need, though I know it can be tricky sometimes to get people on board with new apps.
Yeah, it's not that simple with them.
Have you thought about using Microsoft Teams? If WhatsApp is off the table, it's another possible alternative.
If WhatsApp isn't an option, I'd suggest trying out Signal. It's a great alternative for messaging and calling without fees, as long as both of you install it.
Cool, I'll check out Signal too!
Why not just try any chat app that you both can install? Just pick one that seems user-friendly!
Make sure you both have internet access on the iPhone, though! That’s crucial for any app to work for messaging or calls.

That's actually how we've been communicating, but they aren’t very active on social media.
