Is it safe to use a 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe adapter?

I'm trying to connect my Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB to my system, but my 400W power supply only has a 6-pin PCIe cable. I want to know if using a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter is a safe option for this setup.

If your PSU can handle the load, then it’s technically possible, but I wouldn’t recommend it without knowing its specs. Better safe than sorry—upgrading your PSU is the smartest move if you plan to fully utilize the GPU.

Definitely, trying to power a high-demand GPU like that with a weak link is just asking for trouble!

It's a bit risky. A single 6-pin can handle up to 75W, while the RX 580 can draw up to 185W at full load. If your PSU isn’t high-quality, this could lead to problems. I’d recommend upgrading your power supply instead of relying on an adapter.

Using a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter isn't the best choice, especially since you’re trying to convert a 75W connection for a device that needs more power. The safest route would be to use two 6-pin connectors for one 8-pin, but that only works if they're on the same rail. If that sounds confusing, just get a new PSU to avoid potential issues.
